Director of Development
Full-time position, Monday - Friday, some weekends

A senior and highly visible position at the Bruce Museum responsible for all aspects of fundraising, including: capital campaigns; the annual fund; private major gifts; exhibition underwriting; corporate and foundation support; municipal, state, and federal grants; planned giving; and all programs designed to broaden the Museum’s funding base. Supervise and motivate a staff of eight (Membership Manager, Special Events Manager, Special Events Coordinator; Grants Writer; Data Entry Specialist; Campaign Manager, Campaign Coordinator; and Departmental Assistant). Coordinate and provide staff support to the Development Committee and other related sub-committees and are the principal liaison to the volunteer committees for the Renaissance Ball, the premier fundraising event, and other fundraising committees.

The Director of Development communicates the Museum’s vision and mission and spearheads all levels of fundraising in the institution. They manage and organize the Development Department, conduct annual performance reviews of their staff, and carry out all policies established by the Trustees and the Executive Director/CEO. The Director of Development records and acknowledges all donations and pledges, and communicates transparently and impeccably with the Finance Department. They perform prospect research and create lists of prospective donors. They also have natural social aplomb in cultivating donors and prospects, and maintain the highest professional standards of discretion.

Independent judgment, decision-making authority and common sense are essential prerequisites of the job. They also must have the highest standards of integrity, must be outgoing, self-starting, well-organized, tactful, detail-oriented, innovative and capable of working under pressure and meeting deadlines.

College graduate, preferably with graduate training in a complementary discipline. At least five years of experience in development with a non-profit institution; capital campaign experience is highly desirable. Thorough familiarity with computers and Raiser’s Edge a must. Centennial Campaign and Major Gifts Manager
Full-time position, Monday - Friday

The Bruce Museum seeks a senior development professional to play a key leadership role in advancing the Museum’s mission “to promote the understanding and appreciation of Art and Science to enrich the lives of all people”. The Campaign and Major Gifts Manager is responsible for the oversight, coordination and strategy development for the solicitation of major gift and planned giving prospects and donors who are at various stages of their relationship with the Museum. This entrepreneurial, results-oriented, development professional will work closely with the Director of Development, the Executive Director, high-level volunteers including trustees, and other members of the development team in identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding a portfolio of major and planned gift prospects. We seek a thoughtful, articulate and experienced leader who will focus on building a comprehensive program dedicated to major gifts and planned giving gifts for an upcoming $100 million Centennial Campaign. We seek a person who is strategically oriented, knowledgeable about major gifts, planned giving, capital campaigns, enthusiastic, a team player and goal oriented.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage a prospect portfolio of approximately 140+ individuals for generating major and planned gifts to the Museum.
  • Develop appropriate strategies for cultivating, stewarding and soliciting those donors for gifts toward expansion and endowment.
  • Work with the Director of Development to create the operational infrastructure for a comprehensive capital campaign.
  • Identify, recruit and train volunteer leaders who can extend the reach of staff through involvement in the cultivation and solicitation of prospective donors.
  • Prepare written briefings and reports for the senior staff and other volunteer leaders.

Qualifications

  • An understanding of and ability to articulate the values and mission of the Bruce Museum is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 5+ years experience in development required, preferably with extensive major gifts work in a museum setting and/or or a college/university.
  • Demonstrated success in volunteer and prospect management, and in securing major gifts and planned gift prospects.
  • Knowledge and experience in prospect tracking, donor relations, campaign reporting procedures, and all aspects of campaign management.
  • Exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills required.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written required.

Centennial Campaign Coordinator
Full-time position, Monday - Friday , 9-5

Report to Director of Development supporting anticipated major fundraising campaign. Responsibilities include: prospect research including biographical summaries; produce campaign progress reports; provide collateral materials to expedite major gifts fundraising process. Plan and attend evening events. Ideal qualifications: BA/BS with museum fundraising experience, working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge and Excel. Per Diem Outreach Instructors
Part-time position, Monday - Friday

Per Diem Outreach Instructors Outreach Instructors (Brucemobile and Senior Outreach) are per diem positions. Instructors are reimbursed on a per-class basis. They are paid at the rate of ½ the charged fee. If the Instructor uses his/her own vehicle, travel fees will be reimbursed.

The Bruce Museum seeks Brucemobile Instructors for the Brucemobile, an educational outreach program that travels to classrooms to conduct science enrichment. Offered to students in grades Pre-K to 12, each program is developmentally appropriate and consists of a lesson and hands-on learning activity. All programs are inquiry based and include Museum artifacts and specimens.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in art, science, cultural history, education or museum studies required. Prefer advanced degree.
  • Unattended mobility required in object handling, ability to drive the museum van and visit facilities unequipped to accommodate the physically challenged.
  • Current driver’s license.

General Responsibilities:
    The Instructor is responsible for teaching the Museum’s outreach programs and assisting staff as needed. This includes:
  • Researching background information to build an understanding of program content and materials.
  • Preparing for each class; including assembly and return of materials in a careful and timely fashion.
  • Loading, unloading and driving Brucemobile vehicles with collection objects and program materials.

The Bruce Museum also seeks Senior Outreach Instructors for the Lifetime of Looking program, a multi-visit visual literacy program designed specifically for individuals with early to mid-level Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. The program uses images from the Bruce Museum collection and exhibitions, as well as related hands-on materials, in order to stimulate and engage the participants in meaningful and enjoyable conversations.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to provide a safe environment in which participants' ideas are encouraged, validated, and respected.
  • Understanding that the purpose of the program is to provide an opportunity for participants to stretch themselves mentally and create their own meaning from the images and their experiences. The purpose is not to lecture or to give information.
  • Ability to be flexible.
  • Unattended mobility required in object handling, ability to drive the museum vehicles and visit facilities unequipped to accommodate the physically challenged.
  • Current driver's license.
  • Museum teaching experience is a plus, though not necessary.
  • Knowledge of art and art history is not necessary.

General Responsibilities:
  • Training, observing, co-teaching, and evaluating teaching.
  • Preparing for each class; including collecting and returning materials used for program.
  • Loading, unloading and driving Brucemobile vehicles with collection objects and program materials.

The Education Department of the Museum has a responsibility to present quality programs by qualified museum professionals. Therefore, the Museum will provide individualized training for both positions.
